Maternity benefit – Continuation of payment

After childbirth you should submit the documents about the birth to your health insurance as soon as possible in order to receive your maternity benefit also for the eight weeks after the birth.

If you worked in a paid job before the maternity protection period (6 weeks before giving birth) or were prohibited from working, you must also inform your employer about the birth of your child. This is because the maternity benefit is topped up and paid by the employer. However, since the employer reclaims the maternity benefit paid by the health insurance, the health insurance fund must also be informed. Make sure to tell the date of birth, it is important for calculating the deadlines.
